What are Head Lice?
Head lice are parasitic insects that live on the human head.
Pediculus Humanus Capitus are tiny but can be seen by the human
eye. They live among hair and draw blood from the scalp. Lice
lay their eggs on hair shafts.
How could MY family
have lice? Lice aren't particular. They equally enjoy
hosts with squeaky clean and dirty hair. One louse can multiply
into hundreds of lice within 3 weeks. They spread by direct
contact. To prevent having head lice from crawling into your
family's, avoid sharing head gear, car seats, linens, barrettes,
curlers, sleeping bags, combs, brushes, barrettes, curlers
and clothing.
Do we have lice?
Watch for itching and scratching. Then check heads! Use the
5x magnifier to help see the critters, red bite marks or scratch
marks can be seen on the scalp and neck. In severe cases,
a child may develop swollen glands in the neck or under the
arms. Checking regularly for lice will make their elimination
that much easier.
How to check heads:
Lice run from light, so it is hard to see them especially
in blonde hair. The nits are whitish (empty nits) or brownish
(live nits). They are shaped like ovals the size of sesame
seeds. Use the 5x magnifier to help see their nits near the
scalp all over the entire head and especially behind the ears,
the top of the head and the back of the neck. Nits are firmly
cemented onto hair and will not wash out by shampooing. If
they flake off, you are probably looking at dandruff.
What to do if you
if you find Head Lice: Use the Nit Kit and follow directions
on the bottle. Repeat treatment in 5 and again in 10 days.
As lice are highly contagious, checking and treating the entire
family is strongly recommended. Vacuum carpets, couches, beds,
pillows, chairs and car seats. Wash clothes and linens in
very hot water (130°F). Additional contact with
lice will cause re-infestation.
The Medi-Comb may
be boiled for reuse.
